Film Screening: Adela Peeva's "Whose Is This Song"

February 6, 2017 | 4:17PM

The hour-long film traces the filmmaker's travels across the Balkans as she attempts to determine the origin of a tune that can be heard across the region. In her search for the true origins of a haunting melody, the filmmaker travels to Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria. The trip is filled with humor, suspense, sadness and surprise as each country's interviewees passionately claim the song to be their own and can even furnish elaborate histories for its origins. While folk tunes traveled in the region and took root in different communities, for the emerging nation states folklore was a revered nation-scape repository of the true national essence. The film is an excellent study of the powerful emotions cultivated by the appropriation of folklore by each country’s national narrative.
